Here one can get a magnificent view of the mountains surrounding the city of Kitimat while leaving the town and driving towards Terrace. Kitimat is a model city built by top planners in order that up to 50,000 people could be housed and serviced. The basic industry is a huge Aluminum Smelter, lumbering some fishing and tourist trade. "Kitimat is connected to the Pacific Ocean by the Douglas Channel - a 140 kilometer salt water fjord. Aluminium, paper, forest and chemical products destined for world markets are exported from this natural port."
Picture postcard showing an aerial view of the Nechako neighbourhoods under construction. In the foreground of the photo are Ptarmigan, Plover, Pintail, and Partridge streets. Behind them to the right are some trees, and to the left is an empty area where Nechako School would later be built. In the background runs Nalabila Blvd. with some of the curved streets (Starling, Swallow) running off of it. A black mark has been drawn near the upper middle of the card, indicating where the sender lived (at the 'curve' of Starling Street').
Message from sender (possibly Mike or Nancy Marciniak) on back:
"This picture of Townsite was taken last year, now the whole area is nearly filled with houses. I live near the centre where the cross is.
Three years ago this was all forest, the same as you see all around the edge of the town."
