Barney Mulvaney's dog team with mail from Kitimat nearing Hazelton 1910 see too :Kitselas white settlement. The fabulous Barney Mulvany renowned throughout the north country, now living in retirement at Burns Lake, began his experiences on the Skeena when he carried Her Majesty's mail by dog team and on his back from Kitamat to Hazelton. His was a roving character and in his own words "my first ambition was to start at the mouth of every river in B.C. and go to the head of it to see what was on the other side of the summit". This he claims to have accomplished, but the Skeena was his first love and his wanderings always brought him back to its banks. Like years have been occupied with recording his experiences in prose and verse. His ballad of "Kitselas" recounts a legend of the Skeena doubtless gleaned as he camped with his Indigenous friends along the trail from Kitselas to Hazelton.

Description
Binnacle from the M.V. Nechako
Public Description
Ship's binnacle from the Motor Vessel (MV) Nechako that began life in 1929 as the Cora Marie - luxury yacht of W.C. Shelly, B.C.'s Finance Minister. She was sold in California in the 1930s and later served with the U.S. Navy as a patrol boat during World War II. Kitimat Constructors purchased her in 1952 for transporting construction personnel between Butedale, Prince Rupert, and Kitimat. In 1954 the motor vessel, skippered by Captain Bill Cogswell, began regular trips ferrying construction personnel and freight between Kitimat and Kemano. With Captain Cogswell, she logged close to 1,200 round trips between the two communities. The binnacle was restored and presented by the Kemano Power Operations Group to E.W. Red McKernan, first Superintendent of Power Operations "for devoted service as ship's husband, 1954-1974". Mr. McKernan in turn donated it to the Kemano Museum. Donated by Alcan Primary Metal
