Notes
Other number 45048C. Famed Canadian documentary photographer Malak Karsh was hired in the 1950s by Alcan to take photographs of Arvida and Kitimat. Photograph showing the house of Mr and Mrs August Smits on Starling street. Their house was number 54. It won the first place prize in the Northern Sentinel's 1956 garden competition. There were more than thirty gardens that the judges carefully looked at before deciding the winner. Mr and Mrs August Smits had come in second place the previous year. They were awarded the Northern Sentinel Rose Bowl by Reeve Hallman for winning first place. The house has a white picket fence and is quite small. The yard is very neat and you can see a woman standing in it. In the background there are other houses, trees and mountains.

Pohl and family. Judges this year commented on the number of fine gardens, and those that missed because a boulevard had been left untended or work has been concentrated on either front or back garden but not both. Judges recommened the municipality give a lead in a progressive program of boulevard seeding to improve general appearance of the residential areas.

The Demelt garden is one of several well-developed efforts in the Whitesail area, putting this neighborhood in the forefront with Kildala. Judges agreed that there is a noticeable decline in garden care and upkeep in Nechako area. Mr. & Mrs. Demelt scored heavily for their use of rockeries.
