Kitimat smeltersite construction began in 1951 - during the first stages of construction, housing for over 2,300 men was needed. The main camp near the smelter housed 1,000 men. The river boat, the Delta King, housed another 250 men.

Inside Mount DuBose in Kemano - a power tunnel 25 feet in diameter and ten miles long was drilled from four headings. The tunnellers met at the heart of the mountain.

The Delta King - from Sacramento - a stern-wheeler river boat was purchased, transported up the BC coastline and beached near the Kitimat smeltersite. It was converted into exceptional stately quarters for 250 construction and smeltersite workers.
