The massive Alcan project in the northwest British Columbia was completed in just five years - dam, tunnel, powerhouse, Kemano, transmission line, smelter, and Kitimat. In 2013, the Kitimat Museum and Archives worked with the District of Kitimat, and the Recreation Department, to select images commemorating 60 years of Community in the town of Kitimat. The display can physically be seen on display in the hallway of Riverlodge Recreation Centre.

Miniature aluminum ingot – prior to the tri-lock design – presented to delegates on the Vancouver Board of Trade Goodwill Tour in 1960. The Vancouver Board of Trade also sent a 220-member industrial tour party in 1955 to visit the new towns of Kitimat and Kemano.

Kitimat is situated in a scenic natural setting at the start of the Douglas Channel. It was built in the early 1950's around the aluminum industry - one of the first "planned" communities in B.C. This downtown park provides a quiet place to relax and take in the beautiful surroundings.

Kitimat Works 50 Years
A winter wonderland for downhill and cross country skiers. Alcan along with many other industry leadrs sponser the Snow Valley Nordic Ski Club and its annual marathon, held at the Onion Lake Cross Country Ski Trails, located midway between Kitimat and Terrace.

Here one can get a magnificent view of the mountains surrounding the city of Kitimat while leaving the town and driving towards Terrace. Kitimat is a model city built by top planners in order that up to 50,000 people could be housed and serviced. The basic industry is a huge Aluminum Smelter, lumbering some fishing and tourist trade. The name Kitimat was derived from the Indian Village across Kitimat channel.

Photos for him was a hobby, and he took many photos of the smelter and townsite as it grew around him. Mike also took a number of photos for the Kitimat Northern Sentinel, during the Ken Brumley and Pixie Meldrum years as editors. Mike and his family left Kitimat in 1958, but he spent the best part of 40 years in the photographic field, mainly in the retail/wholesale part of the photo industry.
